In 1896 the sub-judge of undivided Bengal & the 1st f.a. from Berhampore Krishnath College started Durga puja in his Sen Bari at 3 Girija Chakraborty Lane in Khagra, Berhampore. Before Durga puja in Sen Bari, Jaggadhatri puja was organized by the family member. In 1896 it converted into Durga puja with the help of Radhakrishna Sen & his daughter Bindu Basini Devi. After that the son of Radhakrishna Sen, zaminder Jogesh Chandra Sen continue this puja. After his death his sons & daughters organise Durga puja at same place. Now Sabita Sen, wife of late Prasanta Kumar Sen (w.b.c.s.) is continuing our puja. Puja started at soja rath with "Kathama puja".
“Our idol is single structure (eak chalar sabeki pratima kintu bangla pratima noi). Thakur is usually made in "thakur dalan" at our own house. Devi durga with her sons & daughters in a single structure is our traditional style. The structure "kathama"is as old as our puja. It is made with swall wood. Once in vijaya dashami during immersion the "kathama" flown in Bhagirathi River by water current but next morning we got the structure in same condition”, informed one of the members Subir Sen to durgapujaonline.com.
Main puja starts at Sasthi with "bodhan" & "aadhivash". On sasthi the members hang "rachana" at "thakur dalan". It is their culture & tradition to do this every year. Almost 70 years ago on Saptami while returning from Bhagirathi River the priest by mistake touched his foot at the pitcher, the priest died at same day by supernatural cause. The "sandhi" puja started & concluded with firing at open air but now it is not organized due to administrative reason. On navami jaggana & sacrifice of pumpkin & sugarcane take place.
“We do not offer rice bhog to our devi. During "zamindari" period maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandi, zamindar Hari Babu & others come to our puja & offer "aanjali" to devi Durga. On Vijaya Dashami "aaparajita puja" & "devi baran" takes place. On evening local labour (mutia) carry devi Durga for immersion. Up to 1978 a procession of our devi Durga by boat on Bhagirathi river was organized. Now in the era of 3D we are trying to maintain the tradition & parampara which was set up by Radhakrishna Sen whent the puja started”, said another member of Sen Bari.
In 2010 the members are celebrating 115 years of their old traditional family Durga puja at same place. They want to maintain the same traditional, parampara, rules & regulation of old sabeki family Durga puja.
